It is quite common for newborn babies to display jerky movements or startle reflexes while sleeping. This behavior, known as the Moro reflex, is a natural response that occurs when a baby feels a sudden change in their environment or experiences a sensation of falling. The Moro reflex usually disappears by the time the baby reaches 4-6 months of age. However, if your baby's jumpy movements persist beyond this period or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as excessive crying or difficulty feeding, it is advisable to consult with your pediatrician to rule out any underlying medical conditions. In most cases, though, these jumpy movements are completely normal and nothing to be worried about. To help soothe your baby during sleep and minimize these startle reflexes, you can try swaddling them snugly in a blanket or using a specialized swaddle wrap designed to mimic the feeling of being in the womb. Creating a calm and quiet sleep environment can also contribute to reducing these jumpy movements.
